Unit X - In this last unit, you have a chance to get started on "summer time technology maintenance". Chapter 54 will provide you and your students some tips for preparing your technology for next fall.

EOY Student Survey - Each year we ask the TECHS students to reflect upon what was covered in the TECHS course. Before your students leave the course, please have them complete the EOY Student Survey in Chapter 55.

Closing - During this week you as TECHS teachers will be receiving a final survey in the mail. We are studying some possible "big" changes to the course and we need your input. I'm hoping each of you will take time to complete and return the survey.

For those schools who were honored for their TECHS projects, you will also be receiving a token of appreciation for your efforts. To view a list of the honored projects, go to http://blog.studenttechs.org/techs-projects/

Thanks for another good year and have a great summer.

TECHS 2008-09 Projects - Honored projects as well as all projects submitted can be viewed at http://www.studenttechs.org/techsprojects0809 I hope you and your students take time to check out what students created during the year.

TECHS Web Site of the Year - Our Virtual Conference plan was to share a video tour of three submitted web sites and have participating schools select the winning site. Because of the interruptions, we did not make that selection. That means we are asking each TECHS school to cast one vote based upon the three sites that are toured - Gothenburg, Heartland, and Sargent. To watch the videos, go to http://www.studenttechs.org/WebSiteYear

Each school has one vote. Please cast your vote by putting in your schoolname followed with techs09
i.e. esu10techs0809 I need to have you follow this format so that I am sure each school only votes one time. I am the only one who has access to your ballot and I will not be sharing those results with anyone. Balloting ends next Friday - April 24.

Keynote Presentations - We were fortunate to get both Rep. Smith and Rosie Rodriguez from the Attorney Generals office as keynote presenters. As part of TECHS, you might have your students watch these videos and complete the activities. To view the keynote go to http://blog.studenttechs.org/keynotes/

All other presentations can also be seen at http://blog.studenttechs.org/

NETA - I will be headed to NETA on Wednesday and be in Omaha through Friday. Hopefully I will see some of you there. Have a good week and remember to Vote for TECHS Web Site of the Year.

TECHS Web Site / Unit VII - Chapter 40 / April 8

Podcasts /Unit V - Chapter 32 / April 3

Jing Help Videos / Unit V - Chapter 33 / April 3

TECHS Scholarship Applications / Unit VII - Chapter 43 / April 3

TECHS Scholarship Opportunities - As we conclude the year, both the University of Nebraska - Kearney and Central Community College have offered scholarships for students who have sucessfully completed the TECHS programs. The CCC applications are unique in that they are for students who have completed the TECHS class and will still be enrolled in high school during the 2009-10 year.

ESU 10 Internship Opportunity - ESU 10 has had great success hiring UNK students to assist in our help desk support. Many of our current NIS staff started as interns and because of their skills and work effectiveness were hired on as employees. As ESU 10 sponsors the TECHS program, we would like to take advantage of the student connections through that program by seeking applications from seniors who have completed the TECHS program and who plan to further their education at either UNK or CCC - Kearney campus.

Both the scholarship and internship program applications can be found at the top of the TECHS lessons page.

This week I want to focus on the plans for the upcoming TECHS Virtual Conference. As announced last week, the conference will be on Thursday, April 16. The conference will begin at 8 and last until 11:30. I not only hope you will participate but that your students with your help will make the necessary accommodations to allow them to participate for the entire morning.

Things to know about the event:

As this will be a streamed event, your ability to connect should be just a browser and link away.

The event will include two special keynote presentations.

Three technology sectionals will be built into the workshop with topics on programming, networking, and a web 2.0 presentation using a webinar format for presenting. Each sectional presentation will be followed up with a 20 minute student activity.

Each student should have access to their own computer.

TECHS projects will be recognized during the conference.

Participation rizes will be given out during the event.

To learn more about the conference, go to http://www.studenttechs.org/techsvconf09

Registration for the TECHS Virtual Conference workshop can be done by going to http://odie.esu10.org Registered sites will receive pre-conference materials by April 8 to insure that students have the necessary resources for completing the sectional activities.

Scholarships - Last year UNK provided two $500 scholarships for students who had successfully completed the TECHS course, planned to major in a technology program, and would be a freshmen at UNK. UNK again plans to offer at least two scholarships for next fall. In addition, we might have another announcement regarding possible tuition waivers for underclassmen.

ESU 10 Intern Program - ESU 10 has had great success hiring UNK students to assist in our help desk support. Many of our current NIS staff started as interns and because of their skills and work effectiveness were hired on as staff. As ESU 10 sponsors the TECHS program, we would like to take advantage of the student connections through that program by seeking applications from seniors who have completed the TECHS program and who plan to further their education at either UNK or CCC - Kearney campus. The ESU 10 Intern Application can be found on the http://techs.myelearning.org site under the folder Scholarships.

If you have students who have successfully completed the TECHS course during this or previous years and plan to attend either UNK or CCC, please encourage them to look over the applications and consider applying. Note - A student could apply for both a scholarship and the intern position.

We hope to be able to announce scholarship and intern awards at the TECHS Virtual Conference.

Have a great next two weeks. Please consider registering today for the TECHS Virtual Conference as we would like to see how many schools might be planning on participating.

Special Projects Update - In last week's blog, I shared an update on the special projects we will be reviewing an honoring during the TECHS virtual conference. Below I have reviewed each of the special projects:

TECHS Web Site / Unit VII - Chapter 40 / April 8
- Prior to April 8, each TECHS team should send in a one to two minute video tour of their web site. During the TECHS Virtual Conference, TECHS teams will vote for TECHS Web Site of the year.

Podcasts /Unit V - Chapter 32 / April 1 - TECHS will complete the podcast production process from identifying an educational topic, storyboarding the presentation, recording the podcast, and posting the podcast. In submitting the podcast, students will post the podcast(s) to their website and submit the storyboard as evidence of completing the project.

Jing Help Videos / Unit V - Chapter 33 / April 1 - TECHS will use jing or some other screen capture video program to create computer based help videos. In addition to posting the help video(s) on the TECHS web site, students will also submit a help video report as outlined in the directions in chapter 33.

TECHS RFP Proposal / Unit VI - Chapter 38 / April 1 - The response to an RFP proposal requires that students research and then decide on the best hardware/software options in support of technology at their school. It is suggested that they base their proposal based on techology needs at their school.

TECHS Best or Unique Project of the Year / Unit VII - Chapter 39 / April 8
- This project is a catch all activity in which a TECHS team shares about a special project they completed during the past year. Special consideration should be projects that were not part of the other special project activities.

TECHS Scholarship Applications / Unit VII - Chapter 43 / April 3 - Last year UNK stepped forward by providing a scholarship to a student who successfully completed the TECHS class. At this time, we already have two scholarship committments from UNK with some additional possibilities. Please note that students who may have completed the TECHS course in a previous year and are a senior this year are eligible to apply for these scholarship.

Bits & Bytes - Since this class is all about technology, your students might be the leaders in your school for digital journalism. In this weeks Bit & Byte, students from Cozad High School along with their teachers share about how they plan to add video journalism to the curriculum. Check it out under Bits & Bytes folder in techs.myelearning.

Next Weeks Topic - Steps for registering for the TECHS Virtual Conference.

Week of Feb 23 - March 6 - John Stritt

The week got away from me last week so you are getting a two-week update.

TECHS Virtual Conference Date - As of Friday, I only had four sites respond to dates for the end of the year mega-conference. As a refresher, we are planning a morning video conference as a year end summary of the course. The main requirement is that your students set aside a morning to participate in the conference. The virtual conference will allow your students to participate from your school. The proposed dates for the virtual conference is April 14, 15, 16, or 17. We would like your input to insure that students from your school do not have a conflict in participating. Please check your calendars and then go to the following web site to pick the date(s) that work for you - http://www.doodle.com/a4mpd37apd76kuac

Special Project Updates - Yes February is over and it is time to review the "Special Projects" along with the due dates on each project. Your TECHS team is not obligated to do every project but I hope each team will complete at least one if not several. The two that I hope each team would complete and submit are the "TECHS web site" and the "TECHS Best Project of the Year". I will highlight each project in more detail in next week's blog.

Project/Unit - Chapter/Due Date

TECHS Web Site / Unit VII - Chapter 40 / April 8

Podcasts /Unit V - Chapter 32 / April 1

Jing Help Videos / Unit V - Chapter 32 / April 1

TECHS RFP Proposal / Unit VI - Chapter 38 / April 1

TECHS Best Project of the Year / Unit VII - Chapter 39 / April 8

TECHS Scholarship Applications / Unit VII - Chapter 43 / April 3

Web Design - Several of you have sent the web address for your TECHS class. As one of the goals of the course is that the TECHS students will share about technology to the education community, I believe the TECHS web site is the best way to meet that goal. If you haven't started building a web site or haven't sent me the address, please do so. A final evaluation of the web sites will be done on April 8 so your students still have plenty of time to enhance their site. Additional information about the web review can be found in Unit VII - Chapter 40.

Bits & Bytes - The latest edition of Bits & Bytes is an interview with Janine Lim, director of Capspace (Collaborations Around the Planet), shares about opportunities for collaborations with schools
across North America and beyond. In video #1 Janine will present information about Capspace; in video #2 Janine shares about how to connect to the network; and in video #3 Janine will provide additional information about other video conferencing opportunities.

In TECHS Unit VII, video conferencing is highlighted. TECHS could register their schools technology on CapSpace, monitor collaboration opportunities, and share and hopefully
involve teachers in your school in a collaborative experience.

Beginning WordPress – Jason Everett will be presenting another one hour preview of Beginning WordPress on this Thursday afternoon 3:30-4:30. To join, sign in at http://odie.esu10.org

Have a good week. John

Build A Computer - On last Tuesday (Milford) and Thursday (Ogallala), we completed the last two build a computer days. Twenty-four schools and over 100 students built over 30 computers during the three site event. To commemorate the day, William Bolen created a video highlight film starring the BAC students. To view the videos, go to http://www.studenttechs.org/BAC Please feel free to link the video to your TECHS web page.

TECHS EOY Mega-Conference - In last week's blog posting, I mentioned that we are planning on having an end of the year virtual conference. I hope that all of the TECHS schools will be able to join us online for that event. We have selected the week of April 13 - 17 for the week. In order to eliminate as many conflicts as possible, I would like you to go to the following web site and enter your name and check all of the days where you and your students might be able to participate. This does not obligate you but provides us with a way to select the best day out of that week. The web link is http://www.doodle.com/a4mpd37apd76kuac

Podcast and Jing Project - As part of Unit V, both podcast and jing activities were introduced. In Chapter 32 Assignment C are the directions for producing a podcast to be reviewed by the TECHS staff. Information on posting of the podcast can be found in the Chapter 32 Teacher Checklist.

In Chapter 33 Assignment D is the information about producing a jing "help" video. In both cases, we are asking you to post these activities to your TECHS web page and then forward information about the posting of these activities to us by March 30. We will review the postings and announce the honored presentations.

WordPress - Just a reminder that Jason Everett will be presenting an advanced WordPress webinar on this coming Thursday, February 19 from 3:30 to 4:30. He recognizes that this time might rush some of you but join when you can. If you plan on participating, please register at http://odie.esu10.org

2nd Semester Course Billing and BAC participation - During the upcoming week, your school will be billed for participation in TECHS for second semester and also $10 per participant if you attended one of the Build A Computer events. I will be sending each of you an email to confirm numbers.

Have a good week. - John

End of the Year TECHS Mega-Conference - In 2008-09, we scheduled an EOY TECHS conference. Even though there was interest to bring everyone to one location, there were too many conflicts to overcome. We still like the idea of an EOY conference as it provides "summary and closure" to the year.

This year we are again planning an EOY mega-conference for the week of April 13-17. (As we want to make sure that all schools have an opportunity to participate, teachers will receive a survey asking which of these days will work or won't work.) This time the conference will be a virtual conference. In this way, all TECHS schools and even schools that are not part of TECHS can join into the two-way video conference/streamed event. More information about this event will be released in next weeks update.

Special Projects - As noted in the TECHS goals, student projects are a major focus for the course. Even though your school might not be able to complete all of the units, I wanted to update you on the activities that we will be honoring during the mega-conference:

TECHS web site

Jing project - Unit V

Podcast project - Unit V

TECHS RFP Proposal - Unit VI

Video Conferencing Support Project - Unit VII

a scholarship(s) will be awarded to current or former TECHS students.
Still working with area colleges in hopes of being able to provide
scholarships for graduating seniors and possibly even students who are
underclassmen. - Unit VIII

TECHS Special Project of the Year (more information on this will be released in a future announcement)

TECHS 2009-10 - The TECHS Instructional team is already planning or re-thinking the way the curriculum is delivered. Based on the progress of TECHS teams moving through the curriculum, we realize that when you add in your individual activities to the lessons, it is difficult to get through the entire course. Also we have had some questions regarding whether students could repeat or complete some of the lessons if they enrolled for a second year.

Here is a chance to comment to this update - As we plan for next year, we would appreciate any comments you might have regarding the course.

WordPress - Just a reminder that "advanced" wordpress will be on February 19.

TECHS Bits & Bytes - We continue to add a 5 minute video to our TECHS Bits & Bytes series. As part of the lessons, a student activity accompanies most presentations.

Have a good week. John

Week of February 2 - 6 - John Stritt

WordPress - Prior to Christmas, Jason Everett presented an introduction and advanced WordPress training. A few of you were able to participate in one or both. Jason is planning to present the introduction or basic wordpress on the first Thursday of February and March with advanced wordpress on the third Thursday of February and March. These after school events will begin at 3:30 or whenever you can join. Their is no charge and all you need to do is register on Odie. This is open to all teachers.

The first basic WordPress session is this coming Thursday, February 4.

TECHS Bits & Bytes - The latest edition of Bits & Bytes has been posted at the top of the lessons page of techs.myelearning.org This session is on Skype. Our technology trainers share about this program at all of their video conferences. As this program is free and cross platform, it is a good way to get your teachers and students interested in desktop video conferencing.

Unit V - The focus of Unit V is podcasting and jing. Both of these tools can create technology support videos that can be shared with your staff. As part of each unit, we will be requesting that your TECHS team submit an example(s) of their efforts. The TECHS instructional team will review and then honor exemplary projects. All lessons in Unit V are now posted.

BAC Day Update - On February 10 and 12, the build a computer team will be on the road in Milford and Ogallala. We are hoping for good weather as we assist studnets in building another 12 computers.

Have a good week.

This past Monday we did the first of three Build A Computer installments as 11 schools, 65 students, and 17 computers later we completed the task. If you are interested in seeing a 3 minute review video of the day, go to http://www.studenttechs.org/BACKearney

We will be doing our east coast swing at Milford on February 10 and the west coast swing at Ogallala on February 12.

Bits & Bytes - A new installment of Bits & Bytes has been added to the myelearning site. In this presentation, Jason Everett shares about Twitter and his weekly "Google Tips" blog. Your students might want to link his site to your resource page. Also Jason is planning on creating a bi-weekly blog on the best google tips during that two week period. More on that in the future. Look for the next Bits & Bytes session on "Technology Conferences - What happens at such an event".

WordPress - Jason is planning on having bi-weekly trainings on Word Press starting on Wednesday, February 4 - Intro to WordPress and Wednesday, February 18 - Advanced WordPress. He is planning to repeat these sessions again in March and April. If interested, register for as many of these sessions as you might wish to participate in.

Conferences - Still looking to connect with your students via video conferencing. Some of you may have tried to schedule a connection and it didn't work out or I just didn't get back to you. Email and let me know of some dates and times that would work for you.

Until next week. - John

Build A Computer - If your school is planning on attending one of the BAC days or if you and your students want to watch how to build a computer, be sure and watch chapter 27. In addition to the video in chapter 27, there is important information about what you need to bring with you on the BAC day.

Because of date conflicts with January 30 at Ogallala, a new date will be set for early February. That date should be determined this week.

Video Conferences - Several schools have arranged and completed their video conferences with me. If you have a date and time you would like to connect using your distance education equipment, please let me know. Most conferences last between 20 and 30 minutes.

Have a good week.

The focus of these short videos will be for me to bring in different individuals, different software, and possible even some TECHS teams to share what is happening in technology.

The first presentation is a welcome back to the second semester. In this lesson I will be asking students to reflect back on the five goals for TECHS and also to think of some resolutions that they might adopt as a TECHS team for second semester. Below are some resolution ideas:

Technology Understanding - Each TECH will demonstrate understanding of technology covered in the course through completing projects that can benefit others in the educational community.

Employment Opportunities - By the end of the year, each TECHS member will have a personal career plan.

Communication Skills - The TECHS team will continue to develop the TECHS site as a means of sharing about technology with the educational community.

Help with District Technical Support - A list of TECHS support skills will be shared with faculty to make them aware of the support services TECHS can provide.

Show Accountability - All TECHS will complete a “TECHS Support Form” whenever they provide technical support for a faculty member.

This video can be found in the Bits & Bytes folder at the top of the myelearning lessons page.

Building A Computer - As shared in the last blog issue, the Build A Computer day has been scheduled for ESU 10 in Kearney on January 19, at ESU 16 in Ogallala on January 30, and at ESU 6 in Milford for February 10. It is important to note that if you are planning to attend, you are responsible for purchasing your own computer components. You should allow a minimum of 2 weeks for delivery of the components. To learn more about where and how to order, go to http://www.studenttechs.org/BAC0809 If you have any problems ordering any of these items, please let me know.

In order that we might know of your intent to participate or not participate, we are asking you to go to the following site and complete the BAC form. Please complete this form ASAP. The form site is http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pH_mD_ibyZICgtMJH-W3aMg

See the Week of December 15-19 blog for additional information.

I hope that you and your students had a restful and safe break and are ready to take on the challenges of technology in 2009.

John

Week of December 15-19 - John Stritt

For many of you this is probably your last week of school. As you may also be finishing your first semester, I wanted to pass on information about the Build a Computer day plus season greetings.

Build A Computer Update - Last week's update included tentative information about the Build A Computer day activities scheduled at ESU 10 on January 19. This week I have also confirmed dates for this event at ESU 16 in Ogallala on January 30 and and at ESU 6 in Milford for February 10.

As mentioned in the last update, we are asking that you order your own kits. In ordering these kits, it is important that everyone have the same components to ease any problems in assembling plus installation of the Linux program.

We would like you to order the following components from NewEgg.com. You will need to have a credit card as they will not accept a purchase order. The total cost we paid for the components including freight was about $300. Information regarding component part numbers and price can be found at http://www.studenttechs.org/BAC0809

Big question you might be asking, "What will we do with this computer when we have it built?" - Our technology support staff believe they have a plan for you as they feel this CPU could be used as a "War Room Diagnostics Server". During the past year they have internally discussed the need that each school should have a network monitoring system in place in their district. This CPU could serve as that device plus the data that is collected could allow students to learn more about network use. In our Network unit, we would design some new lessons to take advantage of this new monitoring software.

As the BAC days are not that far off, we need to know if you are interested and planning on attending the event at either ESU 10 in Kearney, ESU 16 in Ogallala, and ESU 6 in Milford. Depending on the enrollment numbers, we will also open up this activity to schools who are not in the TECHS program. To enroll you and your students, please complete the survey form at http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pH_mD_ibyZICgtMJH-W3aMg

Season Greetings - Within Unit IV is a short video in which the ESU 10 TECHS team wishes your students happy holidays. The video also includes some catchy ways of converting old technology into holiday gifts.

Until next year have a great break. John

Chapter 20 - Video Conference:
As I read through your comments, it appears that most of you are moving toward the end of Unit III. At the end of chapter 20, I have made the assignment to have each TECHS team participate in a 30 minute video conference with me. The purpose of this video conference is for me to have a face-to-face conversation with your students about the course. A secondary benefit is that I will be introducing the video conferencing unit during the second semester and I would hope that the TECHS team can play a role in supporting that technology.

I have scheduled my first conference for next Thursday and welcome others who might like to try and work it in before Christmas break.

Build A Computer Day:
I have set the BAC day at ESU 10 in Kearney for Monday, January 19. I will be checking with ESU 6 at Milford and ESU 16 in Ogallala to see if they can be a hosting site in their region. The plan for this year is that each school will order their own bundle(s) and bring it with them on the scheduled day. We have ordered in a couple of kits to practice on and will let you know the ordering specs so that everyone will have the same components. We are estimating that the kit will be under $300 per kit. In order to cover costs of meals for the participants, a $10 charge per participant will be paid to ESU 10.
Eleven schools submitted their Wii IR pens for review. We will be checking out each remote for functionality, for ease of use, and for appearance. Congratulations to all the teams that submitted their pen. An announcement regarding "best of show and functionality" will be provided following Thanksgiving vacation.

WordPress
Jason Everett presented the first in a two part series on WordPress as a web design and blogging tool. TECHS schools participating included Sargent, Heartland, Pleasanton, and Dundy County-Stratton. As some other schools were interested but were unable to join the presentation last Thursday, Jason would like to present one more introductory training on WordPress. If you are interested in joining the introductory training on WordPress, please send me an email. We will schedule that lesson during the first week of December with an advanced training during the second week of December.

TECHS Web Site
As a followup to the WordPress topic, you are reminded to have your TECHS students establish their TECHS web site prior to Christmas break. We would like to do a first time evaluation of these sites during the December 15-19. You have the choice of web design program but I will be requesting your web site address by December 15.

Google Docs and Spreadsheets
How are you coming with these applications? Have you had a chance to do survey forms?

Week of November 14 - Finish up and mail your Wii pen into the ESU for review. Be sure and include your final report.

Web Design Plan - In Unit III, the major outcome is to establish your TECHS web presence. In chapter 18, Jason Everett shares about a new web design program that supports both web pages and blogging. If you are interested in using this program, Jason will start out by presenting a webinar on how to use the program plus ESU 10 will serve as the hosting site.

The first WordPress webinar will be this Thursday, November 13 at 3:30. Jason believes that a 45 minute presentation will provide you the necessary information to share about the program with your students. Please sign up for the webinar on Odie. The presentation will be recorded and added to the elearning site for further review.

The TECHS web site should be ready for review by December 1. This will be a preliminary review of the site by ESU 10 instructional team. The emphasis will be on the homepage and not the extended links. A report of suggestions will be emailed to each team.

Unit IV Intro to Computer Platforms - If you have had a chance to complete some of the google docs and spreadsheets activities in Chapter 17, chapter 21 introduces another tool - Forms. TECHS will have an opportunity to create a survey and use the results to support their computer platform choices.

Based on the survey results from your responses last week, we will be setting dates for the build a computer presentations for January.

Unit V - Can we get there for this? Podcasting will be introduced in this unit. TECHS podcasts are due in January.

Stay warm and I hope to receive those pens this week.

John

Week of November 3-7 - John Stritt

Wii Project - Just a reminder that your students should mail in their Wii pen along with their summary report (see chapter 13 assignment c part 8) by Friday November 14. Each school who submits their pen will receive a prize for participation. Your pen and the prize will be mailed back to you by December 1.

Chapter 13 Assignment D - Just a reminder that I would like your students to be taking pictures of TECHS in action. These pictures will become part of a poster and tshirt project that encompasses the 2008-09 TECHS class. Please email the pictures as attachments to the following site john.stritt.techs08@picasaweb.com So far I have not received any pictures yet. If some of you have tried to email attachments and it hasn't worked, let me know.

Unit III - Chapter 18 Web Design - I believe that the development of the TECHS web site is one of the most important resources that your TECHS will be able to share with your educational community. As part of that process, each school must decide what web design processing tool they will be using. Jason Everett, ESU 10 tech trainer and web design specialist, shares in the chapter 18 video about the history of web design and a new program that is being introduced at ESU 10 and will also be introduced by ESUs across the state, Word Press.

I want to know what you are thinking about your TECHS web design program. You can provide that by completing the following short survey - http://www.studenttechs.org/wordpresssurvey

If you are interested in learning more about Word Press, Jason will share about the program using Adobe Connect, a webinar program. We will scheduled some different times to do this presentation. More information will be coming on this activity.

Have a good week. John

Week of Oct 27-31 - John Stritt

Google Docs and Spreadsheet Online Seminar - ESU 10 is sponsoring a series of one hour online technology seminars with their first presentation scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, October 28, from 3:30 to 4:30. The topic for today's presentation is on using Google Docs & Spreadsheets. This is a collaborative tool provided free from Google with three components: word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Learn how to use these tools to work collaboratively with colleagues and students on any project.

ESU 10 recently purchased the program Adobe Connect Pro Meeting. This allows our tech trainers to do webinars. If you having participated in a webinar, you would have the opportunity to see how this technology works plus learn more about technology during this one hour seminar.

What is the cost? No cost. All you need to do is register at http://odie.esu10.org (After school special: Using Google Docs)

How do I connect? Using your browser go to To join the meeting: http://esu10.acrobat.com/googledocs/

For audio you will dial toll free to 1-866-642-1665 Pass-Code: 580543

How does the webinar apply to TECHS? Webinar presentations are common events for a presentation, meeting, etc. The Adobe Connect program is a purchased software but DimDim is a free open source program that has similar capabilities. In TECHS, students could participate and possibly present a webinar session.

Wii Remote - By now, I hope that all of you have received your Wii components. I hope our directions including videos were clear enough to get you started. There are a number of videos out on the web to assist in the process. Our original scheduled date for submitting your Wii pen was October 31. The due date was moved to November 15. Again each team that submits their pen will receive a bonus prize for participating.

Build A Computer - In Unit IV, we cover the Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. As part of the unit, we have always done the build a computer activity. Based upon your comments at the fall orientation, most preferred that we do this activity during first semester. Well first semster will soon be over so I am wanting to get some feed back from you regarding your interest in participating in this activity. Please share your thoughts about the BAC day by completing the BAC Survey.

Hope you are having a great week. John

Chapter 13 - As I was putting some final touches on chapter 13, I decided to close it to the students. Chapter 13 contains a variety of activities with the possibility for you to add your own twists.

Assignment B - The cell phone debate will probably become part of your student's conversations. Again this is an opportunity for you to present both sides of the issue regarding cell phone use. The ethical use of technology - in this case cell phones - becomes the discussion point. You might even have your students talk about other technologies that may have been banned in the past and are now accepted and what might be some future technology issues.

Assignment C - You should be receiving your kit materials - led, on/off switch, and battery holder - to assist in making your infrared pen. For each team that sends in a working infrared pen, they will receive their infrared pen back plus a bonus for participating. The due date has been changed to November 15 for sending in the pen and summary report.

Assignment D - Please have your students start taking digital images and have them or you email them to me at john.stritt.techs08@picasaweb.com I have set my account up as a private account so it is not viewable to the public which includes your students. This is my first experience at using picasa as a picture gathering resource. I'm learning. If you have problems with the upload, let me know. Would you and your students be interested in knowing more about picasa?

Unit III - Much of unit III deals with Web 2.0 tools which will allow student to publish to the internet. Google docs and spreadsheets is available for use by you and your students. If you haven't tried it out already, I would suggest you make sure it is open to both you and your students. Information about getting on line can be found in Chapter 15.

Have a good week.
I hope you have taken time to read what others have posted. I'm looking forward to the first published article by a teacher - hint hint.

Chapter 13 - Assignment C/Wii Remote Activity - I have ordered the necessary supplies to provide each school with one packet of Wii materials less the Wii Remote itself. Unfortunately they have been slow in coming. I will be sending out those items by the first of next week. Place this activity on hold until you receive your materials.
Assignment D/Photo Shoot Project - Based on your posted comments, your students are carrying out many tech projects at your school. In assignment d I am asking that you start taking digital photos and start sending them to me. I have set up a picasa site that you can email your pictures to. These pictures should include TECHS students at work. This is an ongoing project so pictures can be added as you participate in different activities. I am hoping to receive a minimum of 50 pictures from each school. More if you have time. This is the first time I have dealt with Picasa so it is a learning piece for me.

Grade Results - Allison Zwygart (Sterling) brought to my attention that the grade book was not providing any results. Thanks to her email, I became aware of this problem and made some updates to the gradebook site.

To view grades for your students, follow these steps:

Go to the "Tools" menu.

Select the "Gradebook" option which is found in the first column.

To view grades, change "all users" to your school team.

If you have questions about the gradebook, let me know.

Closing - Most times I am posting the weekly post after the week has begun. Since I wanted to share some important updates, I didn't wait. Hope this week is going great for you.

If you got an email announcing this post, I wanted to let you know that we have made you members and you cannot post a comment or add an article to this community.

If you have not been reading the postings, please check out earlier "John's Update" articles. John's update tags will be located in the left hand column.

Important information shared in earlier postings include information about a TECHS Expo for teacher and students and sign up for a free give away to this year's TECHS teams.

Since we should have everyone on board now, I am looking forward to hearing from both TECHS teams and others who are part of the community.
To encourage a (quick) posting, I promised the first person to post that they would also win the Wii remote kit. Vickie Keiser from Gothenburg was the first to respond and along with Wilcox/Hildreth and St. Paul will receive the Wii Remote and supplies kit.

To encourage the rest of you to submit a post within the next few weeks, I am offering everyone else that I will provide each school team the supplies necessary to build the infrared pen that will be used in the Wii Remote interactive board project - chapter 13.

To receive this kit, please post to this weeks update and share about where your students are at in curriculum. Also I would encourage each of you to share about any projects your TECHS might be doing in support of technology or technology use at your school.

TECHS Expo Update - Currently there are 8 schools who have registered for the TECHS Expo on October 21 in Kearney. If you are interested in attending and bringing some of your students, please send me an email along with the names of the students who you will be bringing.

To date I have had no one submit a comment to the John's Update postings. To add a bit more interest and to see who might be reading my entries, I will be giving away a third Wii pack to the first teacher and school who submits a comment. Since Wilcox/Hildreth and St. Paul are already winners, they are not eligible.

As we are nearing the end of sixth week, I am interested in knowing where your students are at in the course. Please submit that information within the comment section.

Some of the things to take note of from the results include:

For questions 1-14, check the average score to see which areas students feel they have understanding. Note that the higher the score, the better the understanding.

Question 17 regarding future plans related to technology.

Questions 21-32 provide evidence to the access students have to technology.

Questions 33-34 shares how students use the internet in support of their classrooms.

Feel free to share the survey results with your students.
Extreme Technology: In Unit II - Chapter 13, the lesson will focus on different trends in technology. In Assignment C, we will look at electronic whiteboards which will include making your own interactive whiteboard with the support of a Wii remote control. Two lucky schools will receive a Wii remote to support their efforts. A drawing will be made of the participating TECHS schools announcing who the lucky schools are. The lucky winners will be posted in an announcement on this Friday.

TECHS Expo: Just a reminder that the Heartland TECHS Expo will be held on October 21 at the University of Nebraska - Kearney. If you are interested in bringing your TECHS students to this event (5 students and 1 sponsor will be admitted free), please send your intentions to attend to sthomas@kearneycoc.org or to me at jstritt@esu10.org
As part of the application process, your students completed an ethics statement. In chapter 5, ethics along with internet safety will be reviewed. Thoughout the course their will be mention of ethics and internet safety and I strongly encourage you to take every opportunity to bring up the topic with your students.

Recently I read an article in our local newspaper which dealt with social networking and the problems that are created and follow student athletes. As this national article is about Nebraska athletes, I think it will create some good discussion about something many of your students participate in which is myspace and facebook networking.

Questions you might ask after they have read the article include:

Do you have a myspace and/or facebook account.

If so, how many times do you post to that account each week

What are the positives for social networking?

Do you think that university athlete's should be restricted in their social networking?

Do you think that any university student should be restricted in their social networking?

Do you think that high school student's should be held responsible for what they might post to a social networking system?

The article can be found at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26509070/

At first you might be asking what is social networking? Social networking as defined by wikipedia is "a social structure
made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that
are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as
values, visions, ideas, financial exchange, friendship, kinship, dislike, conflict or trade." The best known social networks are myspace, facebook, and twitter.

As noted in this and all communities, the members are the community and thus share in all of the content.

My vision for using this community in support of TECHS is that I will use this forum to deliver a weekly update for the course. These weekly announcements will be listed under the TAG listing in the current articles section as "John's Update". Please note that you can and are encouraged to share comments to any of these weekly posts. Last year I began the year using the announcements in myelearning and then a blog later in the year.

I also see this community site as a way to share ideas in support of TECHS. Daily I look through the DIGG Technology listings to see what might be new. I encourage you to check out my postings, make comments to them, and more importantly post articles about items you find of interest.

Can your students view and post articles in this community? By connecting to the web address, they will be able to view articles. They cannot participate however as only those with odie accounts have that privilege.

During the next couple of weeks, I will be adding some content. My first weekly update will be the week of August 11.

Again I welcome you to the community and look forward to your participation.
